This 8-hour self-paced class will give you a solid foundation in the basics of breastfeeding. Update your knowledge in this field. Much has been learned in recent years! Topics include:

  • Basic breast anatomy and physiology
  • Impact of the birth experience on breastfeeding
  • Benefit of skin-to-skin contact and self-attachment
  • How do you know baby is getting enough?
  • A review of positioning and latch
  • When to refer to a lactation professional or medical care provider

This class is included in both our Birth & Postpartum Doula Training programs and does not need to be purchased separately if you are investing in doula training. Class fulfills a certification requirement for Birth Doulas through Lifespan Doulas.

Breastfeeding support skills

This 8-hour self-paced class focuses on how doulas can support breastfeeding mothers through a variety of common challenges and special needs. Topics include:

  • Common problems and solutions
  • Special needs babies, multiples, and premature infants
  • Pumping and alternative feeding methods
  • Keys to breastfeeding success
  • Emotional support of the breastfeeding family
  • Breastfeeding education, dispelling common myths
  • Role of the partner

This class is included in our Postpartum Doula Training program and does not need to be purchased separately. Birth doulas may opt to enhance their skills with this training.

Barbara Robertson

Barbara Robertson, MA, IBCLC

Barbara holds master’s degree in education and is an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. She founded The Breastfeeding Center of Ann Arbor in 2008 and serves as its director where she teaches breastfeeding classes for parents, runs support groups, trains lactation professionals, and is in private practice as a lactation consultant.
