Your Calling to Become a Doula ~ January 2022 Newsletter

calling to become a doula

Do you have a calling to become a doula?

Do you feel comfortable in the sacred space of birthing and dying? Do you intuit just what the birthing mother, new family, or dying person and their loved ones need as they move through these tender, hard, and profound moments? Do you feel drawn to witness, to be part of the circle of support? If your answer is “yes,” you are not alone. When someone is a good fit for doula work, they often report having stepped into the role informally for family members and friends. You may have a calling to become a doula as you are being recognized as such (whether or not the person receiving your support uses the word).

A medical background is not required. You can supplement your income and even create a small business doing work you love. Lifespan Doulas offers online birth, postpartum, and end-of-life doula training. Put it altogether with one of our discounted Doula Business Builder Training bundles. Trainer Patty Brennan has nearly 40 years’ experience and has trained over 2500 people to become doulas. Invest in yourself for 2022!

Federal brief claims regulating death doulas as funeral directors violates First Amendment free speech right. Doulas fight back against the California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau.

Joan Dideon dies at 87. Dideon is the author of The Year of Magical Thinking, a story about grief. I read the book a year after I lost my beloved home in the country due (in part) to the 2007 crash of the housing market. Over the preceding year, our foreclosed home had featured a “For Sale” sign out front. We know, because my husband and I regularly drove by the house, like ghosts haunting. The day I saw the replacement “SOLD” sign, I surprised myself when I burst into tears. That’s when I realized I was grieving a loss, my “year of magical thinking.”

Guessing I am not alone …

in not minding seeing the year 2021 in the rearview mirror. It was a tough year in so many ways and on so many fronts, for me personally, the country, and the world. Hopefully, each of us can perceive a higher purpose through these challenges. And remember, when life feels out of control, we can always choose how we respond.
